Overview

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) was a professional organization for technical communicators that wanted to improve its outdated website. Users had shared feedback about poor navigation, an overwhelming layout, and a frustrating overall experience. My team and I were asked to run a usability study of the existing site and design wireframes and prototypes that addressed these issues.

Problem

The STC site had become cluttered and difficult to navigate. Users struggled to find key resources and reported that the site felt dated and text-heavy. The organization wanted a refreshed design that made information easy to find and created a smoother, more professional user experience.

Process

  • We planned collaboratively in Miro and met regularly on Zoom to align on goals.

    • User Interviews & Usability Testing: Interviewed technical communication professionals and ran remote usability tests using UserTesting.

    • Key Issues Identified: Long, wordy pages; lack of visuals; an overwhelming homepage; confusing navigation.

    • Personas: Developed four personas representing different user types and needs.

Insights

Users wanted a cleaner, simpler design that helped them find relevant information quickly. They valued clear navigation, consistent layouts, and a modern, visual experience.

Solution

We redesigned the STC site to:

  • Add more white space

  • Create consistent layouts

  • Simplify visual hierarchy and text

  • Include more visuals and icons

We tested an interactive prototype with users to confirm improvements.

Impact

Participants described the redesign as “clean,” “organized,” and “much easier to use.”
Navigation was faster, and users were able to find key information more efficiently.

Reflection

This project reinforced how simplifying structure and content can dramatically improve user experience. It also strengthened my collaboration, wireframing, and usability testing skills.
